Elko, NV is the county seat for Elko County which straddles the Humboldt River as it winds for miles and miles. Because Elko is located off Hwy 80 as it passes through from Salt Lake City westward towards Reno, NV, it's also a great location to venture off across other state borders to see the scenery there as well. Although there's so much you can do in and around the Elko area itself, you may not want to go anywhere else.

Lamoille Canyon Scenic Drive and the Secret Pass Scenic Drive are nearby, as well as the famous and beautiful Ruby Mountains is a short twenty miles South of Elko and a must see for any outdoor nature enthusiast where you can enjoy Hiking, Rock Climbing, Hunting, Fishing, and many other outdoor activities in the mountains outside of town.
You'll find summer's weather in Elko is much different than the far Southern part of Nevada, since Elko's elevation is 5,000 feet so it tends to make for even more enjoyable days during the summer with highs in the 80's to lower 90's. If you're into Snowboarding or other Snow sports, you'll want to head up to Ruby Mountains for the most snow since that's where you'll find it more so than in Elko. Although there will be snow, just not as much as you may think. It's rather friendly weather-wise although the winters tend to be in the 30's and colder nights.
